A Grade I event open to horses 4 years of age and older, the race was run at a distance of one and one-eighths miles (9 furlongs) on the turf and offered a purse of $350,000 added.
Originally the event was called the Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap.
From 1986 through 1990, the race was run at a distance of 1 1⁄16 miles. From 1991 through 2008 the distance was lengthened considerably to 11 furlongs, or 1 3⁄8 miles. In 2009, the distance was reduced by two furlongs to 9.
The Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap was replaced by the Pegasus World Cup Turf Stakes in 2019. In this first edition, each contester had to pay a $500,000 entry fee with the organizer adding an extra $1,000,000 for a total purse of $7,000,000 ($3,000,000 for the winner). In the 2020 edition, the race adopted the Invitational format and entry fees were suppressed, so the purse was limited to the organizer contribution.
