I don't see how the photo itself is historically significant. It looks like just a run of the mill news media photo and not really acceptable for fair use. Is there a press photo from his employer that could be used? --B 15:44, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- OK I found the picture from the employer see here. Thanks Taprobanus 18:10, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. I suggest asking that they release a higher quality version of the image under the GFDL. If they are not, then we could probably use it under a claim of fair use (the guy is missing presumed dead, this image is from his biography with no commercial value), but there is at least a chance that they would release it under the GFDL ... and if they do, they might give us something that looks decent. After Jerry Falwell died, I emailed Liberty and they sent us a very nice photo of him and released it under the GFDL ... colleges (particularly smaller ones) will often do that. --B 20:38, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- It is a political issue. For someone to issue a photograph of him to appear in an article that kind of says he was kidnapped and disappeared by pro government forces will be considered insidious and that person will become a candidate to be disappeared themselves. I am not exaggerating events in Sri Lanka. I hope you understand, even for me to write to them is opening myself as a person of interest to those who have disappeared him. May be you should write to them instead ? Thanks Taprobanus 22:35, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- Ok ... if it's that big of an issue, would they be receptive to a foreigner asking for a photo? I'd say just use that image under a claim of fair use if the political climate doesn't facilitate a request. We obviously have firm grounds for claiming fair use ... the only reason to ask is that (1) they might be inclined to give us a better photo and (2) we prefer free media. --B 22:59, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- They will know why you are asking because he is disappeared but may feel much better dealing with a foreigner although I am not sure anyone would be put their name out as to the person who gave it to you. Asking for their permission itself may expose them to danger (even if they comply) and may be unethical under the current conditions. Just my opinion. Thanks Taprobanus 23:08, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- Good grief ... yeah ... I'd say either use that picture under a claim of fair use or use no picture at all. --B 23:45, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
- OK I will use the that picture ( I think you mean the one from the employer) instead of the Tamilnet one. Thanks Taprobanus 23:51, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
