Question: How reliable is the identification of Sherman in this picture? Are there better versions of the image that would allow closer study? Seems to me that the figure with the hat could possibly be Sherman, but it easily could be someone else. The Fort Attaway site does not say it is Sherman. Thanks for any info. Further investigation has persuaded me that this photo does not include General W.T. Sherman. See link to higher resolution picture on main page. This is General William Vandever and his staff, known to be Rome in or around May 1864. It seems to me that the title of this jpg should be changed accordingly.
