I always thought that the yellow was for the sandy beaches, and the red for the many fires that have occurred there.

Nope. The only two meanings of the yellow and red are the Hawaiian Monarchy and the volcanic origins. The symbolism of the colors is described in the various bills and resolutions referring to it that have been submitted to the Hawaii State Legislature, the most recent being the 2008 HCR81 HD1.
