Is there any evidence that the person pictured here is actually Grenville Lewis? The source (1897 Maryland yearbook, Class of '97 photo) does not identify him as such.

I suspect that Lewis is actually the guy at the center of the group photos of the sports teams that he captained (1896 Maryland football, 1897 Maryland baseball, and 1897 Columbian football). It was customary in such photos for the team captain to sit at the center and hold an item such as a football with the year painted on it.

Below are facial similarity scores (out of 100) from Amazon Rekognition, indicating that my suspected Capt. Lewises from the team photos match each other but do not match the supposed Lewis appearing in this Wikipedia file.

PS: The player holding the football in the middle of the 1896 Maryland football team pic (who does not look like the cadet shown here) is indeed identified as Grenville Lewis in Bealle's Kings of American Football (1952), p. 32. --T. Cadwallader Phloog (talk) 13:38, 15 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
