ISIS territory

There are two new maps one from pro-gov [5] and one from pro-opp [6]. They agree at large extent and show that SAA control a larger area in the west of the city than it is shown in the map. ISIS takes over Deir_ez-Zor

Agree with Paolowalter, simply typing Deir Ezzor in the News section of Google we can see several articles stating that armed opposition (mainly Nusra Front and Islamic Front) withdraw from their bases in Deir Ezzor city, and that their half of the city is now controlled by ISIS.--HCPUNXKID 16:06, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

Map update

-removing non-IS rebels, since IS and regime forces are the only ones left in and near Deir Ez Zor city.
-removing arrows since this map is only referenced on the Syrian Civil War template and nowhere else, and the SCW template tracks the current situation and not its progression
-adjusting control areas as per pro-opposition [8] as well as more neutral [9]

The sources assign to the rebels the east section of Al Hweqa and part of the west. The rest therefore is controlled by the army. It corresponds to the brown area in Hawiqa on the map. The source mentions "al-Rashidiya street" to be controlled by the army, but also "part of Al Rashideyyi" controlled by rebels, while it is all brown on the map. The sources claims that "the streets of al-Jabaliya" is under army control but also "parts of Al Jbeleyyi" is under rebel's control. This area is brown in the map. Maybe it could be splitted in two. According to Google Maps, western Hweiqa consists of the entire western portion of the Hweiqa island north-west of the suspension bridge. I've split it into three parts - the IS controlled (including the baath headquarters, furat hospital and governor building), government controlled (from the heart hospital down to ben malek mosque), and contested (everything in between). So it seems about right.

With Rashidiya and Jabaliya, I don't see what the problem is, brown (contested) seems to suit them just fine. Kami888 (talk) 18:59, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Additional info from SOHR [www.facebook.com/syriahroe/posts/556874567754219] with some more details. A pro-gov map is more detailed [10] and match the SOHR description. Given that the two descriptions agree, and teh latter is more accurate, I'd suggest to use it for this map as well. It would reduce substantially the brown areas. Well, except for Hawiqa everything else seems to mostly match up with the pro-government map you gave as well as SOHR. The pro-gov mapper simply drew the frontline right in the middle of Jabaliya and Rashidiya, while here both districts are marked as contested, which is probably more accurate.As for Hawiqa, I'm not sure what to do with it so if you want to change it in some way, you do it yourself and let others judge. :) Kami888 (talk) 21:29, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

I don't think anyone maintains any kind of real presence on Qata'a, which makes its status kinda difficult. Most maps I've seen tend to show it as ISIS control, although this doesn't really mean that necessarily are maintaining operational control of the environs. I think this does raise a crucial issue though - many areas in Syria aren't really strictly speaking "held" by anyone (e.g. the desert West of Deir Ezzor). It feels odd to mark areas which nobody really controls as being under a certain groups control. Simultaneously though showing it as contested might give the wrong message - as it suggests its actively contested, rather than being generally ignored. Looks pretty reasonable to me. Main differences with the current image are that it shows ISIS holding territory to the east of Jafra, and shows them controlling a larger, most coastal amount of Saqer Island.
