Uncropped version from DEA website http://www.dea.gov/photos/cocaine/cocaine.jpg

A cropped version of the image on this page is credited to (AFP/File) at yahoo.[1] However, it does also appear at a U.S. government site.[2] Without context at the DEA site (it is just a link to the image), it is hard to tell if the uncropped DEA version is in the public domain. Yahoo is attributing copyright to AFP/File. CM (talk) 20:27, 30 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

This photograph was taken by a DEA employee during the course of his/her duty for the agency. It is unquestionably in the public domain, it was part of a collection of images released for public and press use. That AFP decided to keep this photo on file is not that surprising and explains the "AFP/File" attribution used by yahoo news. Press agencies have every right to use public domain photographs in their collections and often modify them for editorial purposes, as in this case. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 08:30, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
Just so there's absolutely no confusion, the DEA multimedia library states "Information, including photos, generated by the Drug Enforcement Administration is in the public domain and may be reproduced, published, or otherwise used without the Drug Enforcement Administration's permission. However, citation of the Drug Enforcement Administration as the source of the information or photos is appreciated, as appropriate."[3] ˉˉanetode╦╩ 08:34, 31 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
