This place in Yunnan province was formerly known as Zhongdian, but was renamed in 2001 after the fictional land of Shangri-La in the 1933 James Hilton novel Lost Horizon, in an effort to promote tourism in the area.
A three day 'Horse Racing Festival' also known as 'Heavenly Steed Festival' is held some time in June, which involves dancing, singing and eating, in addition to the racing of horses. Horse traders and minorities assemble here in their finest attire of furs and silks.
