File:York Minster main entrance door St Peter.jpg

Original file(2,000 × 3,008 pixels, file size: 3.46 MB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Description Main (west) entrance door of York Minster with effigy of St Peter and "semaphore saints" on sides. Left:Royal arms. "The Royal Heraldry of the nave and chapter-house practically commemorates Edward I and his family. He is the central character intended to be honoured or represented wherever the family shield is seen, or the lions noticed" (Purey-Cust, p.371). Right: Vert, six lioncels rampant (unknown). Per Arthur Perceval Purey-Cust, Heraldry of York Minster, 1890-96, Introduction, p.30[1]: "six lioncels rampant, is one which is displayed four times in the Minster in stone and once in glass, and which has been the object of many surmises. I venture to think that I have rightly identified it with the arms of Geoffrey Martel, who married Maude, daughter of Henry I., and was the founder of the great family of Plantagenet".
