Summary

Description Pvt. William Christman was the first military serviceman interred at Arlington National Cemetery, May 13, 1864, a month before Arlington was appropriated as a military cemetery. Christman passed away in a Washington, D.C., hospital after a 5-week illness with the measles. He was in the Army for less than a year. During his time in the Army, he was able to buy his family a home, which is still in the Christman family today. (U.S. Army photo by Rachel Larue/released)
