Per References: “The commission for the above picture was placed with M. Bouguereau, by the late A. T. Stewart, in 1874, with the understanding that the painting was to be the artist's greatest work, and not a nude subject; the picture was not finished until after the death of Mr. Stewart. When finished in 1878, M. Bouguereau stated that he considered the work his masterpiece.”
