Summary

Description
English: West Kirk Culross. This ruined church lies about 1 mile north-west of Culross Abbey but can be approached by a footpath leading up from the west carpark.

The West Kirk has also been known as the Wester Kirk, the Old Parish Church and St Michaels. It was the parish church of Culross until the Reformation. It is a small simple church, oblong in plan, with a crow-stepped mortuary aisle added to the south side at a later date.

The church has been in ruins since before 1633. An Act of Parliament in 1633 states ‘the kirk callit the paroche kirk of Culrois is ane old kirk quhairine seruice is not nor hes not beine vsit since memorie of man, and is altogether rwinous, decayit, and falline downe in divers pairts.’

The graveyard contains many fascinating stones dating from 1620 onwards.
