Summary
editDescription | Published originally in the 1964 picture book Washday at the Pa, distributed to New Zealand schools. The picture depicts a young girl standing on a wood fire stove to warm her feet before bed. Some have speculated that she was posed there by the author, Ans Westra because the act of putting feet where food is prepared is strictly tapu (forbidden) in traditional Māori custom. Black and white photograph, gelatin silver print, now on collection at Te Papa. |
