Summary
DescriptionWaiting for the train that will never come... - Flickr - National Library of Ireland on The Commons.jpg |
The railway station at Lisbellaw in Co. Fermanagh looks like something from a 1950s movie from the US mid-west. The grass growing up between the tracks and on the platform, the dilapidated fittings at the station, and the single human standing forlornly dreaming of the train that will never come! All that is missing is a dust whirl and some tumbleweed blowing along! +++ UPDATE +++ This is one of our sad train station stories. Thanks to Sharon Corbet we know that the station closed on 1 October 1958, so we're looking at nearly a year's worth of weeds. That rather lovely station house was designed by William Murray (1822-1871), architect to the Dundalk, Enniskillen & Londonderry Railway Company. Nothing remains of this station today, as the line was paved over for part of the A4 road. Photographer: James P.
