Description

1860-1900 carte de visite photo of an elderly man with beard, by W H Gill of 33 Catherine Street, Devonport, England (previously of James Street). The back of the card advertises "portrait, landscape and equestrian photography". This image is one of a pair with File:W H Gill Devonport 003.jpg; they may be husband and wife.

Points of interest
  • Although his beard is white, his skin is smooth; he could be 50-60 years old.
  • His left eye looks towards the camera, but his right eye does not, possibly indicating a divergent squint, or blindness in the right eye, or poor eyesight in both eyes. This is nevertheless a sympathetic and beautiful portrait.
