Sir Augustine Nicolls (1559–1616) was a judge (a Justice of Common Pleas). He is shown between figures of Justice and Prudence. A monument in a cathedral or church provided an important opportunity for celebrating a dead person's virtues, character and achievements. Monuments were also served to perpetuate the names of individuals and families.
