English: A portrait of Peter Williams, painted around 1810-1815. Born a slave in New York, Williams was an ardent Methodist and served as sexton of the John Street Methodist Church. He and his wife were freed in 1796 by the Methodist Society. Afterwards, Williams ran a shop on Liberty Street. He supported the establishment of the Zion Church for Negroes in 1801 and was one of the original trustees.
