Description |
Van Gogh attached so much importance to contemporary literature that in Paris he painted no fewer than four still lifes of modern French novels. Earlier, when he painted Still Life with Bible, he had been critical of the new techniques of the French impressionists. Yet once he arrived in Paris, he realize that his tonal treatment of light and dark and his fondness for sombere shades of black were actually very old-fashioned. He began to experiment a great deal with a more colourful palette and a more expressive style of painting, composed of distinct dashes of colour. inv.
