  • The model is Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland, Vincent's favourite model at this time, an almsman known in those days as "orphan men". Vincent had a stash of clothes for his models and in this case dressed Zuyderland in a billowing artist's smock suggesting, as Christie's lot notes comments, a certain empathy between the pair. The lot notes record that the drawing was purchased around 1952 by the writer Peter Matthiessen, who had been given $1,500 by his grandmother as a wedding gift with the instruction to purchase something significant with the money. He chose this drawing from a gallery in Paris where he was staying.
