Description
English: Victorian Railways 5'3" gauge 1,500 V dc overhead 'Swing Door' emu No.8M driving car (built as loco-hauled coach 1888, rebuilt to emu 1923, withdrawn 1967) at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. The 'Swing Door' stock was built for loco-haulage in 1887-1907 but rebuilt at VR Newport in 1919-24 as emu cars which could run as single cars or any combination up to 8 cars. 194 cars were single- ended or double-ended driving motors, 32 single-ended driving trailers and 112 trailers. Theywere withdrawn in 1958-84 although some conversions to parcel vans and even works shunters (!) lasted until the 1990's.
