Summary

Description

The colour palette of the MOS Technology 6569 graphics chip (VIC-II in the PAL version, used in the Commodore 64). The values are based on research by Philip Timmermann. Source: [1]

Note on the text at the top of the image: unlike in the IBM16 and Win16 palettes, which are in a regular stepping in relation to an RGB intensity (for example 0, 1/3, 2/3 and 1 in the case of IBM16), the RGB values given here for the VIC-II palette are translations of values from the PAL YUV model, and furthermore are after gamma correction (see the link to Timmermann’s page for details). Therefore, colour space and gamma information must be given in order to maintain exactitude. I have made the information part of the image for the case that an image viewer or editor ignores the relevant chunks.

Orthopraxy

For any PNG screenshot from a Commodore 64 emulator, it is recommended to fix the colours to have the values as here if they are not so, and then add a gAMA chunk with a value of 45455 (hexadecimal B18F) and an sRGB chunk with rendering intent 1 (relative colorimetric, which is the best for most screenshots), and optionally a cHRM chunk with the values given in the image (multiplied by 100,000).

On a slightly different, but related, note, many C64 games are in a mode that halves the horizontal resolution in order to increase the number of possible colour values per pixel. To find if the game is in this mode, resize (do not resample) the width to 50%, then resize it to 200%. If you end up with the same image you started, add a pHYs chunk with a value of 2 for the width and 1 for the height in the type “unknown unit” (type 0). This notifies that each pixel has an aspect ration of 2 to 1. The image should have a size of 320×200 in both cases.
