Ave de rapina, alimenta-se de restos orgânicos, diminuindo a probabilidade de outros seres silvestres serem contaminados por bactérias oriundas dessas carcaças. Há quem diga que são aves saneadoras da floresta. Podem ser encontradas em matas, bosques e campos. Existem registros dessa ave desde o Canadá até a América do Sul.
