Description

1860-1900 carte de visite photo of a man in waistcoat and jacket, by an unknown UK photographer.

Points of interest
  • The sitter is possibly blind, or has one lazy eye, because his eyes are looking in different directions. You can test this by opening a larger version of the image and then covering one side of his face; this will make the direction of gaze of the other eye easy to see. Then repeat the process with the other eye.
  • The jacket or blazer has a contrast border
  • His does not have a tie, bow tie or cravat, but a different type of tie.
  • He sits with confidence, but does not have a watch chain (the signifier of success, often used without the watch).
  • The reverse of this card is blank.
