English: Synthetic Aperture Sonar imagery of the USS L-8, developed using data collected using the KATFISH™ system as part of partnership technology demonstration between the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research and Kraken Robotics. On May 26, 1926, L-8 was sunk at the entrance to Narragansett Bay, off the coast of Rhode Island, as a test by the U.S. Navy of a newly developed magnetic influence exploder.
From the imagery, the submarine appears to be largely intact and appears to be resting on its port side. Sections of the outer hull are missing, likely caused when the vessels propellers were removed in the late 1980s. Image courtesy of Kraken Robotics.
