Summary

Description

The U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) at Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, in 1957. Note the newer style of markings on her angled flight deck, although the hull number is still repeated on the ramp. The carrier USS Valley Forge (CVS-45) is moored opposite of Intrepid, behind Valley Forge are two amphibious command ships, USS Mount McKinley (AGC-7) and USS Taconic (AGC-17). The command ship USS Northampton (CLC-1) is visible at left.

Note the differences between the two Essex-class carriers. Valley Forge received no modernisation since she had been commissioned, whereas Intrepid received the most thorough modernisations (SCB-27C and SCB-125).
