Summary

Description
English: First page of the September 15, 1906 issue of the Warsaw based Tygodnik Ilustrowany weekly.

The headline text briefly summarizes the events of the Siedlce pogrom.

The English translation of the text (ilustrated with a picture taken earlier on Piekna Street in Siedlce by Adolf Gancwol):

BLOODY INCIDENTS IN SIEDLCE. As we write this, it is still difficult to determine from the received telegrams the cause and the course of the bloody incidents in Siedlce which began on September 8th about 8 o’clock in the evening. According to some telegrams the incidents started after shots were fired at <Russian> soldiers on patrol which left two of them heavily wounded. Other telegrams claim the shots were fired from the roof of one of the houses but missed. Then, the army started shooting at that house and later on – also at surrounding houses from which shots were also fired. The houses in the Jewish neighborhoods were particularly heavily shot at. The number of deaths and injuries has allegedly reached 200. After the shooting, the army has searched the houses very strictly. Dangerous fires erupted in various parts of the city. City life froze. Only soldiers were seen on the deserted streets. Cannons were set at the outlet of Warszawska Street. According to the accounts of journalists at about 10 o’clock in the evening, two hours after first shots have been fired, a pogrom of the jewish stores began and lasted until morning. The shops on the Piękna, Warszawska and Prospektowa as well as several adjacent streets were destroyed. Cannon fire has destroyed a few houses.
