Salamanca is ten miles farther from Madrid than San Diego is from Los Angeles. For this route, Renfe offered rides on several slow trains, and a few fast ones. I chose the fast: about an hour and a half each way, past many acres of farmland. Doable as a day trip, although many tourists will bridle at the prospect of three hours total travel time to-and-from.
