Summary

Description
English: A 400 × 300 μm region of the surface of a piece of CR-39, photographed with a microscope. The CR-39 has been exposed to energetic (⁓10 MeV) deuterons and then etched for five hours in a hot (80 °C) sodium hydroxide solution. The deuterons leave trails of molecular damage, and the material around those trails is etched away in the bath. The resulting pits, or "tracks", are visible as dark circles in the microscope image. The larger the track, the lower the energy of the deuteron that produced it. Also visible are some noncircular features caused by scratches or defects in the CR-39.
