Description Tips of the third rails on Metro-North Railroad's Harlem Line just north of the Commerce Street grade crossing in Valhalla, NY, USA, site of the 2015 Valhalla train wreck. The rail's design, so the trains can take power from the underside of the rail rather than the top as is customary for most other US railroads that use third rails, was seen as a possible factor in causing some of the fatalities and injuries on the train after it struck the vehicle in the grade crossing.
