General Negley (standing uncovered in this picture) formed with his di\i-sion the advance-guard in the forward movement from the Tennessee against Bragg. This picture (takenat Cove Spring, near Stevenson, Alabama, before the advance) shows the arduous character of the countrythrough which the march was made. Crossing the Tennes.see at Capertons Ferry, Negleys division pressedforward, and on September 9th held the passes of Lookout Mountain. Next day, crossing Missionary Ridge,he took up position in McLemores Cove. This was destined to become the battle-field of Chickamauga. andhere Negleys advance was checked.
