English: The night view of Tokyo station taken from Shin-marunouchi building : After civilization and enlightenment in Japan in 1854, the Japanese Government was going to push forward westernization desperately to catch up with Western civilization. At first, they acquired Western architectural technologies in order to construct modernize city, and imitated architecture of the British Empire which was a world's greatest large empire in those days. Tokyo Station is built with queen Ann style, and queen Victoria style and is one of the best masterpieces of the Japanese early Western building. |

欧米から「イスラムの猿真似」と酷評されつつも、文明開花時代の日本の西洋建築に重大な役割を果したイギリス人建築家、ジョサイア・コンドル。その真弟子であった明治最大の建築家、辰野金吾が手がけた最高傑作であり自身の集大成である。イギリスのクィーン・アン様式やヴィクトリアン様式の強い影響を受けつつ、内部の装飾に日本的な鎧兜や干支が用いられており、日本国内では「辰野式ゴシック様式」と呼ばれる。
建設当時は、天皇も使用する駅、日本国内のあらゆる鉄道の起点となる駅としてだけではなく、日露戦争に勝った日本帝国の威容を示すとともに国威を発揚する戦勝記念建築としての意味合いがあった。
