Summary

Description
English: The Waverley Castle Hotel This hotel was probably the earliest mass concrete building in Scotland and was constructed in 1869-71, and extended in 1876. (Source: Borders and Berwick, An Illustrated Architectural Guide by Charles Alexander Strang) Originally known as The Waverley Hydropathic Hotel, it is owned by the Shearings Hotels group. The address Skirmish Hill, Waverley Road, Melrose, refers to the site of a battle in 1526 at which the young King James V was present as a prisoner of the Douglas Family. The combined forces of the Scotts, Kerrs and Elliots fought unsuccessfully to free the King.
