Summary

Description
English: The Lang Cairn This is a view along the length of the Lang Cairn, which is the best-preserved of several long cairns of 'Clyde' type that are found north of the Clyde estuary; these have a wider end where the stones of a concave facade enclosing a forecourt area: see 1866729 and 1081513.

For a detailed archaeological description, see the WoSAS link in the end-note.

This image was taken from near the wider (eastern) end. The cairn contained a long burial chamber that was divided up by stone slabs into smaller compartments. At the time of writing, the site had been examined, but not excavated. From a distance, it appears only as a long purple mound (thanks to its covering of heather).

This chambered cairn dates from the Neolithic period (4000-2500BC). It is given statutory protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.
