This is the great glacier-region. From Bute Inlet to Unimak Passnearly all the deep gulches have glaciers, some of which are vastly greaterand grander than any glacier of the Alps. The American student needno longer go abroad to study glacial action. In one of the gulches ofMount Fairweather is a glacier that extends fifty miles to the sea, whereit breaks off, a perpendicular ice-wall three hundred feet high and eightmiles broad. Thirty-five miles above Wrangell, on the Stickeen River,between two mountains three thousand feet high, is an immense glacierforty miles long, and at the base four to five miles across, and variouslyestimated at from five hundred to one thousand feet high or deep.
