"Die Seymour-Expedition befand sich derweil auf dem Rückzug nach Tientsin und lief Gefahr, aufgerieben zu werden. Die Zahl der Verluste war hoch. In dieser für die alliierten Soldaten seit langem erstmals kritischen Situation ist es am 22. Juni 1900 vor der Erstürmung eines Arsenals zu der in Deutschland später mythisierten Äußerung Seymours »The Germans to the Front« gekommen. Das gleichbetitelte Gemälde von Carl Röchling, das deutsche Soldaten kampfesmutig in China zeigt, galt als Ikone deutscher Historienmalerei zur Kolonialgeschichte und fand in unzähligen Nachbildungen und Abdrucken weite Verbreitung."
