Parahughmillera (Eurypterus) maria Clarke Page 84 See plate 21 1–4 A series of carapaces showing notable variation in the position and size of the eyes, partly due to different direction of compression [see text fig. 37]. Paratypes. × 2 5 A carapace and three tergites. The carapace shows fairly normal outline and position of eyes. The ocular nodes are preserved while the surrounding visual areas are broken out. This condition produces in fully compressed specimens the apparently very small size of the eyes, seen in figure 1. × 3 6 Specimen showing the form of the six tergites. × 3 7 A young entire specimen, still retaining a trace of the broader carapace and preabdomen. × 3 8 An older individual, with mature characters. Natural size 9, 10 Two abnormallv compressed carapaces. Figure 9, × 3; figure 10, × 3½ 11, 12, 13 Sternites showing the median suture, the transverse line and the antelateral lobes. All specimens are from the Shawangunk grit at Otisville, Orange co., N. Y., and are in the State Museum
