Summary

Description
English: Tai Lewis Rogers Houses These elusendai/almshouses date back to 1620 when 10 (later converted into 5) houses for the poor were erected under the will of Lewis Rogers and administered by the Church. Research by the historian Cyril Hughes shows that initially the inhabitants were all men and all subject to a strict code of conduct. Amongst a lengthy list of evictable offences were cavorting with loose women, drinking alcohol and swearing. Neighbour was encouraged to spy on neighbour and tale carriers were well rewarded by the religious authorities.
