| Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | The most widely circulated and therefore well-known aspect of Gray's visual art was likely the characteristic graphic illustration he presented throughout his published works, and elsewhere. The article describes these as "using strong lines and high-impact graphics [in] a unique and highly recognisable style", and cites notable influences and celebrated artists with which it was favourably compared. It adds valuably to reader understanding of the man, to be able to see what in practice this meant -- i.e. how he used strong lines to create high-impact graphics that were so distinctively and recognisably his.
The Sunday Herald image is a good choice for this. It was probably his last major visual work, and well exemplifies his mature graphic style, and the bold, simple, striking, strongly focussed character and strong linear elements of so much of his published design. Commissioned as a newspaper cover, it is likely to be one of his most widely published and seen works before appearing here. The image and its appearance in itself attracted comment and coverage at the time. And it is notable as Gray's personal contribution, at an epochal time for Scotland, to a cause he had supported and argued for all his life. Fair-use reproduction of an artist's work is not something to be undertaken lightly. But really the only way for a reader to get a sense of what kind of thing an artist created, is to be able to see some representative example. For this reason, it is submitted that the work does add significantly to what the reader understands of Gray from the article. |
