Das Wappen wurde mit einer Mail vom 20. Januar 2005 von der Stadt Leipzig, Referat Medien, Kommunikation und Stadtbüro Leipzig nach einer Anfrage durch Mow-Cow unter stadtwappen@leipzig.de zur Benutzung in der Wikipedia freigegeben.
Die Hoheitsrechte für das Wappen liegen jedoch bei der Stadt Leipzig (s. u.) und es muss dort für den jeweiligen Nutzungszweck um Erlaubnis gefragt werden, ob das Wappen verwendet werden darf (siehe auch hier).
