| Description |
English: St. Paul United Methodist Church in Dallas was conceived as a mission project of Wesley Chapel, New Orleans, in 1865. The church was formally established as St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church by freedmen in a brush arbor on its present location in August, 1873. The congregation met in a series of wooden buildings in the same block for nearly thirty years. In 1901, the church laid the foundation for the brick church that stands today. By 1912, worship commenced in the finished basement as the sanctuary continued to rise overhead. The building was completed between 1924 and 1926. Purchase of brick in lots as the membership could afford accounts for the variation in brick color discernible in this photograph, taken on November 6, 2012. Because the congregation that founded St. Paul is the same congregation that worships there now, St. Paul is recognized as the "Original Community" of the Dallas Arts District that grew up around it. A recorded Texas Historic Landmark as well as a Dallas Landmark, St. Paul is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. |
