English: Located east of St. Donatus, (New village.) Jackson County, Iowa. Including the former Tete des Morts High School for Boys, built in 1875 (oldest in Iowa). The Outdoor Way of the Cross, built in 1861, believed to be the 1st of its kind in the U.S. it winds its way along the hill behind the church. The Pieta Chapel, built in 1885, crowning the bluff behind the Catholic church. The 14 brick alcoves of the Way of the Cross, each containing an original print of Christ’s journey to crucifixion, culminates at the chapel. It is modeled after the Chapel du Bildchen in Vianden, Luxembourg. Inside the chapel is a replica of Michelangelo’s Pieta statue. Also included is the St. Donatus church rectory, built in 1857, a 14 room structure used as a combination church, rectory and schoolroom. Part of the St. Donatus Historic District, 1990.
