Stèle commémorative sur le lieu de la mort de Tipu Sultan dans le fort de Srirangapatnam

Tipu Sultan (1750 - 1799), appelé le tigre de Mysore était le maître de l'état de Mysore. Formé par les militaires français, il était un guerrier aguerri mais également un érudit à l'origine d'innovations importantes dans son royaume. Farouchement opposé à l'expansion anglaise et allié des français, il a remporté plusieurs victoires éclatantes mais a fini par être vaincu en 1799 par une coalition indo-anglaise. Il est mort au combat dans le fort de Srirangapatnam. Une stèle commémore le lieu où son corps a été trouvé. Après sa mort, les ouvrages militaires et le palais de Tipu Sultan ont été rasés, il reste néanmoins son palais d'été qui est ouvert à la visite.
