Summary

Description
English: Beja in the Alentejo, Portugal. Etching. Image 165 x 246 mm, Plate 192 x 255 mm.

Signed J. C. Robinson 1872 in ink.

Inscribed top right in the plate: "Yes. Speak English. All right. Fox Pyles." Inscribed lower left in 19th century handwriting: "The Visconde de Montserrat ~ from the artist ~ in remembrance of their unexpected and unintentional but most delightful excursion to Baja." A fascinating dedication, the Vsconde de Monserrat was Sir Francis Cook (1817-1901), whose collection of paintings at Doughty House Richmond and the Quinta at Monserratt was formed with Robinson's advice.
