Limestone & shale in the Devonian of Ohio, USA.

This quarry near Toledo, Ohio targeted limestone for cement-making purposes. An interbedded limestone and shale unit of Middle Devonian age called the Silica Formation (also known as the Silica Shale) is the overburden at this site. The Silica Formation is richly fossiliferous with typical mid-Paleozoic marine invertebrates such as brachiopods, bryozoans, corals, crinoids, and trilobites.

Locality: Benchmark Materials-France Stone Company Sylvania Quarry (= Hanson Aggregates Midwest Incorporated Sylvania West Quarry; = Medusa South Quarry & Medusa South-South Quarry), north of Sylvania Avenue & south of Brint Road & west of Centennial Road, town of Sylvania, northwestern Lucas County, northwestern Ohio, USA (41° 41' 27.04" North latitude, 83° 44' 47.40" West longitude)
