ELOGIO DI LUCA SIGNORELLI
La Città di Cortona non meno famosa delle altre di Toscana per aver dato alle Belle Arti uomini famosi, e singolari, fu Patria di Luca Signorelli, essendo venuto alla luce nella medesima nel 1440 in circa da Egidio di Ventura (1) di molto illustre famiglia (2), e da una sorella di Lazzero Vasari di Arezzo Uomo nel dipingere assai valente. Fu egli ammaestrato nelle prime regole della Pittura da Pietro della Francesca dal Borgo a S. Sepolcro, della di cui maniera fu esattissimo imitatore. Quali avanzamenti sotto la disciplina di sì valente Professore avesse fatti il Signorelli, lo resero manifesto le varie opere, che condusse in Arezzo, ove diede le prime pruove del suo valore, avendo dipinto nel 1472 a fresco la Cappella di S. Barbera: nella Compagnia di S. Caterina a olio uno di quei segni, che portanti nelle sacre Processioni; in S. Agostino la tavola [...]
