Description

A temple in Trinidad & Tobago.

Island nations, and mainland countries around the Caribbean sea experienced significant wave of migrants to sugar cane plantations. Over 2 million Indo-Caribbeans were brought to the Indies by British, French, Portuguese, Spanish and Dutch colonial powers. Many did not know where they were going. While some migrated willingly for opportunities to support their families, many were deceptively hired from mainland India. According to 19th and 20th century archives of the British government, these plantations had slave-like work conditions, and were persistently abused in these plantations. These Indentured Labourers, as they were then called, nevertheless retained their sense of culture, building temples and maintaining social life through festivals such as Dipavali. Over the generations, they mixed and mingled with migrants from other parts of the world, giving rise to unique syncretic culture, cuisines and language. Most Caribbean nations now have a small to significant proportion of Indo-Caribbeans.
