During the Civil War, women could not join the military, so some disguised themselves as men to enlist. Sarah Wakeman became “Lyons Wakeman” and fought in several battles. She is buried at

Chalmette National Cemetery. Sarah liked the opportunities she didn’t have as a woman. She wrote, “I am as independent as a hog on the ice.”
