English: By local legend this is a portrait of Sally Sayward Barrell Keating Wood (1759-1855), also known as Madame Wood, of Kennebunk. Madame Wood was Maine's first fiction writer. This portrait was most likely painted after she had settled in Kennebunk and lived with her granddaughter.
