English: Puerto Ricans would often draw pictures of saints, although painted images were less common than carved wooden images. This small panel was probably created as one of many for the front of a pulpit or altarpiece in a church. Saint Barbara is greatly revered in Puerto Rico, because she is believed to protect against hurricanes, which are a regular threat to the island. She is depicted here with a crown, a palm of martyrs, and the tower with three windows where she was imprisoned before being beheaded at the behest of her father.
