Description

Another look at bus 10030, a 2010 Gillig BRT on route 248. It's just ended its run from the Green Line station in West Valley to the 5600 West station on the Red Line in South Jordan.

The UTA has been ordering Gilligs since 1995, starting with the Phantom (with successive orders in 1996 and 1997). The low-floor era began in 1999, with Advantages being introduced into the fleet. Following another order of Advantages in 2001, BRTs entered the fleet in 2006, followed by more orders in 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012.

There have been a few non-Gillig buses introduced to the fleet since 1995. Articulated New Flyers were ordered in 1998, but those were sold off several years ago. Three hybrid New Flyers entered service in 2002, and those still see limited use. Thirty-foot Optima Opus buses were ordered in 2005 and 2006. Finally, fourteen Van Hool A300s entered service for use in bus rapid transit lines in 2008 and 2009.

The UTA aims to introduce 101 new CNG buses in three years. I don't know which manufacturer the UTA plans to use; does Gillig even make CNG buses? Several sixty-foot articulated bus rapid transit buses will also be ordered soon.

The 5600 West TRAX station lies in the western periphery of the Salt Lake Valley. Directly north of the South Jordan Parkway station, things here are almost as desolate as at that station. However, a bus does serve this station (the 248), unlike at South Jordan Parkway.
